For RS232/RS485/RS422 repeaters included terminal block is very important. Some converters on the market do not come with them. A terminal block is a screw down wire adapter that attaches to the DB9 serial adapter. It simplifies cable installation to attached cables such as CAT5 or CAT5e without the need to make a custom cable or adapter. Without the terminal block a custom cable needs to be made and that can be time consuming and expensive. Even if you are using the DB9 in your present installation it makes sense to have one for future applications. All of our high quality RS485/RS485 converters/repeaters include terminal blocks at no extra charge.
Although RS485 and RS422 converters can be used to extend the distance of the RS232, the RS232 extenders are a better solution because they are more economical. The REP-232-3P and REP-232-7P are isolated and full duplex and are much more cost effective then the RS485 and RS422 converters.
The REP-232-3P is a RS232 data line extender. It extends the distance of the RX and TX data lines. The REP-232-7P is RS232 data and handshake signals extender. It extends the data lines RX and TX as well as the handshake lines CTS, RTS, DTR and DSR.
The RS232 port normally has a distance limitation of 50 ft (15 m) depending on the driving RS232 port. The RS232 extender converter pair will reliably extend the distance of the RS232 signal up to 4000 ft (1.2 km). If you need to extend the distance further then that we would recommend using the RS232 to fiber optic converter which can extend the distance up to 12.5 miles (20 km).
The REP-232-3P and REP-232-7P RS232 extenders are sold in pairs because they use a proprietary 4 wire interconnection protocol. They need to operate in pairs - one for each end.
Ruggedized converters are converters that are not susceptible to vibration and shock and must be specially reliability tested for that. Ruggedized converters are not really needed in most applications unless you are in an environment susceptible to vibration and other adverse environmental factors such as off-roading, on a boat or a plane.
SerialComm offers both regular and opto-isolated RS232/RS485/RS485 repeaters. Opto-isolated converters are usually used outdoors or in applications with noise or ground loop problems. There is no electrical signal path between one connector and the other and use optical LEDs to transfer data. This will protect your devices from voltage spikes and lighting and make the converter less susceptible to noise and ground loops. Opto-isolation is not surge suppression and the difference is a damaging voltage surge might destroy the converter and not the device it is protecting thus protecting your expensive device or computer.
