DESCRIPTION
The SerialComm SER-FIBER-SM is a high quality
industrial-grade bi-directional externally powered RS-232 / RS-485 /
RS-422 to single mode (SM) fiber optic converter (fiber optic modem)
enclosed in a heavy-duty steel housing. Besides the capability of
long distance data transmission, fiber lines are inherently
resistant to EMI/RFI and transient surges including lightning;
therefore, they are ideal for data communications near heavy
electrical equipment and other electrical or atmospheric
interference conditions. The single mode fiber optic converter can
extend the RS232 / RS485 / RS422 signal distance to up to 12.4 miles
(20 km) using SM fiber optic cable. The RS232, RS485, and RS422 can
be connected in any configuration; for instance RS232 can be
converted to RS485 or RS422 via fiber. The unit supports serial data
rates up to 460kbps and features auto-sensing data turnaround and
therefore requires no flow control or any software drivers, The
converter has no DIP switches or jumpers making it Plug-and-Play.
The 232-FIBER-SM has a terminal block connector for easy
installation and either ST type or SC type connectors for the fiber
optic links which needs to be specified. The media converter is
wall, panel, or DIN rail mountable. Free optional DIN rail mounts
are available at checkout for this converter. An external 9V-36V /
100V-240V power adapter is included in package. This product is
backed by our 30 day money back guarantee and 5 year warranty.

FLEXIBLE SERIAL CONVERSION
This serial converter is very versatile.
Not only can you extend RS-232, RS-485 or RS-422 data but convert from one
serial protocol to another. For instance on one end of the fiber optic
you can connect RS-232 and the other RS-485 or RS-485 to RS-44 or any other
combination.

TROUBLESHOOTING INSTRUCTIONS
| |
Using one SER-FIBER-SM unit:
Perform a loop back test on one unit:
Plug the power connector to the
converter. Both the PWR light
and RX light should be on.
Connect the fiber optic in to
fiber optic out. Only the PWR
light should be lit.
Connect the RS-232C port to the PC RS-232 port.
Running a hyper terminal program on the PC, send ASCII characters to the
SER-FIBER-SM converter from one PC port, and check that the characters are received at the same PC port. This tests that the transmit and receive functions of the
SER-FIBER-SM unit is working properly.
When data is transmitting to the
converter the TX light should blink
and when the converter is receiving
data the RX light should blink.
Using two SER-FIBER-SM units:
Check that all connections comply with the connection diagrams.
Perform a loop back test on two units:
Plug the power connector to the
converter. Both the PWR light
and RX light should be on both
units.
Connect the fiber optic in of
one converter and fiber optic out to
the other converter.
Connect the fiber optic out of
one converter and fiber optic in of
the other converter.
Only the PWR light should be lit
on both converters.
Connect the two RS-232C ports to two PC RS-232 ports.
Running hyper terminal programs on both PCs, send ASCII characters to the
SER-FIBER-SM converter from one PC port, and check that the characters are received at the 2nd PC port. Repeat the test in the opposite direction. This tests that the transmit and receive functions of both
SER-FIBER-SM units are working properly.
When data is transmitting to the
converter the TX light should blink
and when the converter is receiving
data the RX light should blink.
