2. Why do terminal blocks make installation simple?

For RS232 distance extender adapters an included terminal block is very important. Some converters on the market do not come with them. A terminal block is a screw down wire adapter that attaches to the DB9 serial adapter. It simplifies cable installation to attached cables such as CAT5 or CAT5e without the need to make a custom cable or adapter. Without the terminal block a custom cable needs to be made and that can be time consuming and expensive. Even if you are using the DB9 in your present installation it makes sense to have one for future applications. All of our high quality RS232 extenders include terminal blocks at no extra charge.

3. Why RS232 extenders are better solutions then RS485 and RS422?

Although RS485 and RS422 converters can be used to extend the distance of the RS232 the RS232 extenders are a better solution because they are more economical. The REP-232-3P and REP-232-7P are isolated and full duplex and are much more cost effective then the RS485 and RS422 converters.

4. What is the difference between the REP-232-3P and REP-232-7P?

The REP-232-3P is a RS232 data line extender. It extends the distance of the RX and TX data lines. The REP-232-7P is RS232 data and handshake signals extender. It extends the data lines RX and TX as well as the handshake lines CTS, RTS, DTR and DSR.

5. At what distance can the RS232 extender communicate reliably?

The RS232 port normally has a distance limitation of 16 ft (3 m). The RS232 extender converter pair will reliably extend the distance of the RS232 signal up to 4000 ft (1.2 km). If you need to extend the distance further then that we would recommend using the RS232 to fiber optic converter which can extend the distance up to 12.5 miles (20 km).

6. Why are the RS232 extenders sold in pairs?

The REP-232-3P and REP-232-7P RS232 extenders are sold in pairs because they use a proprietary 4 wire interconnection protocol. They need to operate in pairs - one for each end.
