TO FIBER OPTIC CONVERTER

The SER-FIBER-MM is a high quality industrial grade (wide temperature range with static and surge protection) multi-functional serial to fiber optic converter (fiber optic modem) that supports asynchronous serial communications (RS232, RS485, and RS422) through fiber optic links. Besides the capability of long distance data transmission, fiber lines are inherently resistant to EMI/RFI and transient surges; therefore, they are ideal for data communications near heavy electrical equipment and other electrical or radio interference.

A multi-mode fiber optic converter can extend the RS232 / RS485 / RS422 distance to up to 1.2 miles (2 km). Standards can be mixed and matched, so RS232 devices can be connected to RS485 / RS422 devices, or RS485 (2-wire) devices can be connected to RS422 (4-wire) devices without using a converter and isolator.

The unit supports serial data rates up to 460kbps and features data format auto-sensing and self-adjusting, and, therefore, no DIP switch or jumpers are required. When working with RS485 signals, the SerialComm's auto-turnaround feature eliminates the need for flow control.

The SER-FIBER-MM has an 8-Way Terminal Block for power and serial connections and either ST type or SC type connectors for fiber optic links.  Free optional DIN rail mounts are available with the converter. Separate external power supply is included in package.

TROUBLESHOOTING INSTRUCTIONS

 

Check the connections according to the connection diagrams. Make sure the power LED is ON and the RX & TX LEDS are OFF when there is no data communications. Perform a loop back test on two SER-FIBER-MM converters. Attach the two SER-FIBER-MM converters by attaching the FIBER IN to the FIBER OUT using a MM Fiber Optic Cable. Connect the SER-FIBER-MM RS-232 port or RS-485 port or RS-422 port to a PC. Send ASCII Characters from a hyper terminal program from one converter to the other. This will test both the transmit and receive functions. .
